Grant Associates designs landscape strategy for 1,300 new homes in South Dublin

Grant Associates is working with Fletcher Priest Architects to design the masterplan for a new community in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, South Dublin for developer Quintain Ireland Ltd.

When complete, Cherrywood Village will include over 1,300 homes, three public parks and over 50,000 sq ft of retail and civic amenities as well as primary and post-primary schools.

The masterplan builds on the principles set out by the Strategic Development Zone status for the area, and Fletcher Priest and Grant Associates are coordinating their work with the design team for this wider area, including Dublin-based Architectural practices Urban Agency and O’Mahony Pike Architects.

Green and blue infrastructure constitutes a key element of Cherrywood Village Masterplan with the opportunity to create a very well-connected village adjacent to the Luas Tram Line into Central Dublin and close to the Wicklow Mountains and the sea.

"With the climate and biodiversity emergency we are living in, Cherrywood Village is an opportunity to create multi-functional, sensory-rich open spaces that provide amenity for the community, sustainable water management and biodiverse wildlife habitats."

Peter Chmiel, director at Grant Associates

Within the masterplan, Grant Associates has developed the design of strategic Greenways - generous walking, jogging and cycle routes which connect residents to existing parks, the village centre and Luas Tram stops.

The designs focus on resilient planting typologies that feed off existing wildlife corridors, manage the site water run-off through a sequence of rain gardens, and incorporate a wild range of pollinators as part of the ‘All Ireland Pollinator Plan’.

Other spaces in the masterplan include Pocket Parks that provide local amenity close to people’s front doors.  Each of these will have a different theme, such as Woodland or Productive Planting, but all will incorporate natural play and seating to encourage residents to engage with the natural world.

"We approached the masterplanning process by establishing characterful neighbourhoods that are informed by the landscape setting. We’ve designed a tapestry of new open spaces to reconnect with existing mature habitats, creating new homes for both people and wildlife that are rich in biodiversity. Our goal is to provide cherished homes where all generations can socially interact, play, relax and learn throughout the seasons and all within the context and beauty of the natural world."

Carly Lamb, Senior Associate at Grant Associates

Quintain, one of the largest residential developers in Ireland and responsible for the regeneration of the 85-acre site surrounding Wembley Stadium, will seek planning permission for 1,000 homes at Cherrywood Village before the end of this year. Further planning applications will be made 2021.
